Worker Burned by Steam Release

A recent incident has highlighted the risks associated with steam venting operations.

A worker was opening a steam ventilation valve located below a ventilation discharge pipe. Unbeknownst to them, water trapped in the vent piping had been inadvertently heated. When the valve was opened, hot water spilled from the pipe, landing on the worker’s right shoulder and back, causing thermal burns. The worker was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment.

Key takeaways for industry

  • Design with safety in mind – Venting and release systems should be designed so that operators are not positioned in the line of fire when opening or closing valves.
  • Protect all personnel – Systems should also be designed to ensure workers and others nearby are shielded from any unintended releases.
