About WorkSafe

WorkSafe is part of the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS), that assists the regulator in the administration of the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 and any other laws relating to work health and safety. This includes the provision of inspectors and other staff to secure compliance with the legislation.

The WorkSafe Commissioner is the regulator under the WHS Act. Discover additional information about the functions of the regulator here.

The principal objective of the WHS Act is to provide a framework to protect the health, safety and welfare of workers in Western Australian workplaces, and of other people who might be affected by the work.

WorkSafe Industrial and Regional

The directorate is responsible for work health and safety legislation, inspections and noncompliance management in the construction, transport, wholesale, manufacturing, regional and primary industries.

WorkSafe Service Industries and Specialists

The directorate is responsible for work health and safety compliance in the services, retail, public sector and related industries, and provides specialised inspectors across industries in relation to plant, engineering, human factors, ergonomics and occupational hygiene.

WorkSafe Investigations

The directorate is responsible for investigations into serious matters relating to non-compliance with tenure conditions, illegal mining activity, safety incidents and workplace injuries and deaths.

WorkSafe Mines Safety

The directorate is responsible for occupational safety regulatory services - mining operation, inspections, audits and investigation, national uniformity initiatives, and promoting safety and health outcomes, including education and information, technical assessment and review, and statutory approval processes for people involved in the exploration, mining, extraction and processing of mineral resources.

WorkSafe Petroleum Safety and Dangerous Goods

The directorate administers legislation covering dangerous goods, explosives, major hazard facilities, petroleum operations (both onshore and offshore) and geothermal operations.

Regulatory Support

The division supports the activities of the WorkSafe Group through the provision of services covering administration, data intelligence, business systems improvement, and finance, and develops and delivers health and safety information and education, regulatory training, and policy and legislation advice.

Safety, Resource and Environmental Regulation Legal

The division offers advisory, litigation and regulatory prosecution services to the Minister, statutory office holders and business units connected to the Safety Regulation Group and the Resource and Environmental Regulation Divisions of DMIRS.
