    Outdoor workers

Outdoor workers, spanning various occupations and job tasks, are often exposed to high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, significantly increasing their risks of skin and eye damage and the likelihood of developing occupational skin cancer.

In Australia, outdoor workers receive up to 10 times more UV exposure than those working indoors.

    • PCBUs with outdoor workers have their duties ( a duty) of care to develop and implement control measures to ensure their workers’ protection.
    • Workers have the duty to take reasonable care of their health and safety, which includes complying with health and safety policies related to UV radiation protection.

To begin tailoring protective strategies to your role, click on either the PCBUs tab or the Workers tab for guidelines and insights. You can also assess your understanding of UV radiation and protective measures by visiting the Test Your Knowledge tab.

Use the tools to ensure safety for both you and your workers.

  • What can you do?

As a Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU), you play a crucial role in creating a safer work environment. By following these simple steps, you can effectively minimise UV exposure and protect your workers.

    Step 1: Plan

Planning is crucial. Begin by utilising the IMPLEMENTATION GUIDE, which can assist in both the planning stage and gaining support from management. This guide also plays a key role in integrating UV safety into the work health and safety agenda.

    Step 2: Assess the Risk

Use the RISK ASSESSMENT TOOL to conduct a thorough UV exposure risk assessment, identifying potential hazards and assessing the level of risk to your outdoor workers.

    Step 3: Take Action

Develop an ACTION PLAN to address identified hazards and minimise UV exposure. This plan could include engineering controls such as providing shaded work areas, administrative controls to avoid peak UV times, or enforcing the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) like UV-protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses.

    Step 4: Monitor and Review

Regularly monitor, document your actions and results, and gather worker feedback to refine your approach. Plan your next step using the OUTDOOR WORKERS GUIDE, developed to provide WHS representatives with practical insights and guidance on implementing UV protection policies and practices in the workplace.

    What is UV radiation exposure?

Working outdoors exposes workers to UV radiation from the sun. This may become hazardous specifically when:

    • Little or no PPE is used.
    • Hot temperatures prompt workers to remove their PPE.
    • Working near or around highly reflective surfaces such as sand, concrete, white house paint, and water.
    • No shade or protection is available.
    • Work vehicles do not have tinted windows.

UV radiation can lead to sunburn, premature ageing of the skin and serious health issues such as
    eye damage and skin cancer.

Test your knowledge of the potential risks associated with UV exposure in outdoor workplaces by taking this quiz to assess your understanding of UV hazards.
