Understanding and managing critical risks is essential to maintaining safe workplaces in high-hazard industries. This webinar, hosted by Marianne Amato, Manager Critical Risks, will provide an overview of the regulatory frameworks that govern Major Hazard Facilities (MHFs) and the mining and petroleum industries in Western Australia.

Presented by Luke van Baaren, Team Leader Major Hazard Facilities, Gary Cresswell, Team Leader – Inspector of Mines, and Vaughn Hinkley, Team Leader Petroleum Safety, the session will explore how these sectors are regulated, the key risks they manage, and the approaches used to prevent major incidents and protect workers, communities and the environment.

The session will also provide an opportunity for participants to ask the presenters any relevant questions.

Know the speakers

Marianne Amato

Marianne is the Manager Critical Risks within LGIRS. A senior manager and geoscientist, she has more than 25 years of global experience in technical, regulatory and leadership roles across the oil and gas value chain. Marianne has led teams to deliver strategic and regulatory outcomes, as well as identify and monetise exploration resources.

Luke van Baaren

Luke is a Team Leader of the Major Hazard Facilities Branch within LGIRS, with more than 25 years' experience in safety regulation and engineering. He is a qualified mechanical engineer and has extensive experience in dangerous goods and major hazard facility regulation, including process safety, risk management, audits, inspections and incident investigations. Prior to joining the regulator, he worked in engineering and asset integrity roles in industry. He currently leads a team responsible for regulating high-risk facilities across Western Australia, with a focus on public safety.

Vaughn Hinkley

Vaughn is the Team Leader of the WorkSafe Petroleum Safety Team within LGIRS. With more than 22 years' experience in high-risk resource and petroleum industries, including extensive experience within the safety case regime and petroleum safety regulation, Vaughn brings expertise in safety assurance, process safety, risk management, inspections, investigations and regulatory leadership. His operational and regulatory experience enables practical, evidence-based solutions that support sustainable safety outcomes across the industry.

Gary Cresswell

Gary is the Team Leader of the South Inspectorate of WorkSafe Mines Safety within LGIRS (based in the Collie region). He has been in the mining industry for 37 years working throughout Australia and Papua New Guinea in underground and opencut mines. He has worked in coal, lead, zinc, silver, copper and gold commodities. He has been with LGIRS for 4 years.
